Record-breaking volumes at the World Sports Betting Cape Town Met powered by OpenBet technology

OpenBet processes 3x average daily trading volumes with zero downtime at flagship South African racing event

OpenBet has achieved a major milestone in its partnership with South African operator World Sports Betting (WSB), successfully powering record-breaking trading volumes during the 2026 World Sports Betting Cape Town Met.

During one of South Africa’s most prestigious racing events, OpenBet processed more than three times WSB’s average daily trading activity with zero downtime, underlining the resilience and scalability of its fully integrated technology stack.

World Sports Betting, established in 2002, operates across sports and horseracing through both digital and retail channels. The Cape Town Met is a cornerstone fixture in its racing calendar, traditionally generating significant spikes in demand and placing substantial pressure on platform infrastructure.

Less than a year after completing its phased migration to OpenBet’s modular ecosystem, WSB demonstrated the performance capabilities of its new platform in live, high-volume conditions. OpenBet’s Player Account Management (PAM) platform went live in February 2025, followed by the sportsbook launch in October 2025, creating a unified, enterprise-grade solution built for scale.

Developed in close collaboration with WSB, the solution has been fully localised for South Africa’s regulatory and player landscape. Enhancements include 50-leg accumulators, partially redeemable free bets, advanced Telebet functionality for telephone wagering, and integrated pools betting for sports and racing via OpenBet’s Trading System. A comprehensive compliance and taxation framework ensures operational confidence and long-term scalability.

At the centre of the platform is OpenBet’s PAM technology, supporting all customer activity through streamlined KYC processes, unified wallet functionality and real-time reporting. The infrastructure provides a stable, compliant and scalable foundation as WSB continues to expand within the South African market.

Africa’s sports betting market is forecast to reach US$3.43 billion by 2029, with operators increasingly prioritising robust, regulated technology to support sustained growth. OpenBet’s global experience across regulated jurisdictions positioned it as a strategic partner for WSB as the operator strengthens its leadership position.

Runa Walia Desai, Chief Customer Experience Officer at OpenBet, said:

“From the outset of our partnership, our focus with World Sports Betting has been on building a strong, scalable foundation for long-term growth. The 2026 World Sports Betting Cape Town Met was a defining moment, and processing more than three times average daily volumes with zero downtime highlights both the resilience of our technology and the strength of our collaboration. This milestone also marks our expansion into Africa, extending our global footprint to six continents.”

Warren Tannous, CEO at World Sports Betting, added:

“Partnering with OpenBet gives us the confidence to scale at speed, knowing we’re backed by the industry’s most trusted technology. The modular solution supports our ambition to significantly expand our sportsbook offering and manage increased engagement levels. We look forward to continuing our collaboration in the years ahead.”
