Google strengthens its gambling ad policies - affiliates and aggregators face stricter compliance measures

Google has introduced significant changes to its gambling and gaming advertising policy, a move that is expected to reshape how iGaming promotions engage with their audiences. The updated rules, set to take effect on April 14, introduce stricter country-specific definitions and expanded certification requirements for advertisers.

One of the major updates is the heightened scrutiny on affiliate marketing and aggregator sites. The new regulations emphasize that content must be either informational or comparative, rather than solely promotional. Websites that include direct links to gambling platforms will now be explicitly classified as promoting gambling, which could impact their advertising eligibility.

Country-Specific Regulations and Certifications

Google’s revised policy also introduces official restrictions for specific countries where gambling ads are entirely banned. Advertisers will need to stay informed about these localized regulations to ensure compliance and maintain their ability to run campaigns on Google’s platforms.

Another key change targets the rising popularity of social and sweepstake casinos. The new rules establish a clearer distinction between “non-casino online games” and traditional gambling, addressing a common gray area in advertising.

For skill-based games, Google now requires advertisers to determine whether their game is legally considered gambling in a particular region. If so, they must comply with all gambling-related restrictions and obtain the necessary permits before running ads. This clarification aims to prevent misclassification and ensure that gambling certifications are obtained where required.

Stricter Rules for Social Casino Advertisers

Social casino advertisers will now be required to apply for Google Ads certification. If they also promote real-money gambling services, they must maintain separate advertising accounts for these two categories.

Additionally, Google has reinforced its prohibition of real-money gambling ads appearing on social casino platforms or associated websites. Violations of this policy can lead to immediate enforcement actions, including ad restrictions or account suspensions.

Zero-Tolerance Enforcement and Penalties

Google is also strengthening its approach to policy enforcement. The company has announced that violations could result in immediate and permanent account suspensions, signaling a shift from its historically more lenient stance.

Repeated or serious infractions in other areas of gambling-related advertising could lead to similar penalties, reinforcing the importance of strict compliance. With Google adopting a zero-tolerance approach, advertisers must ensure they meet all policy requirements to avoid disruptions to their campaigns.
